Child killed, another injured after family car leaves highway, flips into creek

AN 11-year-old boy has tragically died after the family car flipped into a creek south of Mackay.

The accident happened on the Bruce Highway around five kilometres north of Carmila on Sunday morning.

Police said for reasons unknown, the family car left the highway and overturned in Gillinbin Creek around 9.30am.

Sadly, an 11-year-old boy died at the scene. His younger brother, believed to be aged nine, sustained minor injuries.

A woman in her 40s believed to be the boys’ mother was also injured.

Police said it was expected she would be airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital for treatment.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
