Church pastor prays for Orlando survivors to die

Every now and then, a story goes viral online that seems so incredulous you think: this must be a fake.

The shark that apparently leapt into the air and tried to take a bite out of rescue chopper? That photo comes to mind. When I first saw it, I thought, “Wow, that’s mind-blowing – surely it can’t be real?”

And this week, any time the name Donnie Romero pops up, I find myself having the same reaction.

“Wow, this guy is mind-glowingly cruel, unkind and homophobic. Surely people this hateful can’t be real?”

After the mass shooting in Orlando, he publicly stated that he is praying for all surviving victims to die.

“They are all perverts and pedophiles, and they are the scum of the earth, and the earth is a little bit better place now,” Romero said in his sermon, amongst other disturbing things. (You can watch its in full here if you desire, but prepare yourself for a vile spewing of hatefulness.)

“There are still several dozen of these queers in ICU and intensive care and I will pray… that God will finish the job that that man started, and he will end their life. And by tomorrow morning they will all be burning in hell, just like the rest of them, so that they don’t get any more opportunity to go out and hurt little children.”

It gets worse.

This week, he offered a thinly veiled threat in his sermon when he suggested that members of his church would shoot LGBT activists who plan a protest outside his church this weekend.

“I’m not saying, ‘Go kill these people.’ The government should be doing it,” he said, then added:

“There are people here who have guns, and they’re going to protect the building. If somebody came here, it wouldn’t be a good day. It’s not a very good idea. We live in Texas, OK?”

How does this man represent religion and God?

He believes gay people are “the scum of the earth” simple for existing.

I have to say I have the same view.

But only if you switch out the words ‘gay people’ for ‘Donnie Romero’.

He’s a hateful, hurtful homophobe and if you look up ‘scum’ in the dictionary, I think it would quite fitting to see his rude head smiling back at you.

Let’s just hope his call to arms to his congregation goes unanswered, or Monday morning could deliver news of yet another devastating gun-related mass murder in the not-so-United States.
