Man charged over bank robbery at Coolangatta

AN Elanora man has been charged over an armed robbery at Coolangatta.

It is alleged that he held up staff at the Suncorp Bank on Griffith Street shortly before midday yesterday.

He is accused of approaching three bank tellers with a cloth covering his face and demanding money.

Police said, although he threatened to be armed, no weapon was produced.

Staff complied with the demands and the man allegedly escaped with a bag of cash.

A short time later two good samaritans made a citizens arrest on Chalk Street and detained him until police arrived.

The Bulletin reports that officers found the man in possession of an iron bar when he was arrested.

Police investigations are continuing.
