Christmas has come early for Gold Coasters, with the launch date for the city’s much-anticipated new ferry service revealed!
In just two days, we will finally be able to set sail on HOPO, with the ferry service officially opening on Sunday, December 8.
Galey, Mal & Moyra from 1029 Hot Tomato will be the lucky first passengers on board the boat, with the much-loved radio trio taking the maiden voyage on Saturday afternoon.

The voyage will take the hosts from Seaworld at Main Beach to the Mayor’s Christmas Carols at the Broadwater Parklands in Southport, which is just two of five popular waterfront precincts that the Ferry Service will be stopping at.
Other stops include Marina Mirage at Main Beach, Home of the Arts at Surfers Paradise and Appel Park at Surfers Paradise.
The new ferry service is part of a two-year trial, and if successful, Gold Coast Council says additional ferry stops may be considered.
“From Sunday, people can get on the new ferry HOPO,” Mayor Tom Tate confirmed during today’s full council meeting.
“We will start with five stops, however i’d love to see it go to Tipplers in the future because that’s a wonderful asset, but you have to have a boat to get there…
“This way with HOPO, you don’t have to have a boat! You simply hop on and hop off.
“There’s already comments saying why won’t it go further north? But give it a time.”
Tickets to take a ride on HOPO can be purchased online at hopo.com.au, on the ferry, or at a Sea World Cruises terminal.
It’s understood the ferry will stop every hour, with one ferry heading upstream and the other heading downstream.
