Commonwealth Games: Athletics veteran wins her first Games Gold

Australian athletics veteran Kathryn Mitchell has won the Gold Medal for the Women’s Javelin at Carrara Stadium during the GC2018 Commonwealth Games.

The 35-year-old has competed in the Melbourne, Delhi and Glasgow Games and had never had a podium finish.

In the process of earning her Gold, she set a new national and Commonwealth Games record.

“I’ve had such a good season,” Mitchell said.

“We’ve changed a few things, we’ve brought in some new members of the team, and it has really worked.

“I knew what I had to do and hoped I could do it, I did it tonight and what a place to deliver it.”

Mitchell’s Australian teammate, Kelsey-Lee Roberts, managed to move into the second position with her last throw of the night.
