The first buildings will begin to rise over the former Parklands site within weeks as construction of the 2018 Commonwealth Games Athletes’ Village begins.

The city’s showgrounds for 25 years, the site has been cleared and the first sod turned on the $500 million project which eventually will be home to more than 6500 competitors.

The building program, started Wednesday, is expected to take 23-months with the construction of basements for 10 towers started and the arrival of large cranes ready to move in next month.
Games boss Nigel Chamier said he was pleased with the progress of construction across all venues.
