Cops find 16.5kg of cannabis in car during traffic stop in rural NSW

A man has been charged after police allegedly found 16.5kg of cannabis in his car during a random traffic stop in the NSW Riverina last night.

Officers from Deniliquin Local Area Command were conducting patrols on the Sturt Highway at Hay just after 9pm on Saturday when they stopped a Holden Commodore at a service station for a random breath test.

The 43-year-old male driver allegedly failed the roadside test and, while conducting a search of his vehicle, police allegedly found a total of 16.5 kilograms of cannabis.

Police said the drugs had an an estimated potential street value of between $112,000 and $143,000.

The man was arrested and taken to Hay Police Station where he was charged with supplying a prohibited drug.

He was refused bail to appear in Deniliquin Local Court today.
