Cops hunt man after woman carjacked, stranger throat-punched

POLICE are searching for a man who allegedly attempted to carjack a woman before punching a stranger in the throat outside a supermarket in Newcastle yesterday afternoon.

The woman was stopped in traffic on Loma Street at Waratah around 5.30pm when a man jumped in her car and demanded she drive him to Mayfield.

The woman complied and drove the man to Mayfield where police said he was dropped off on Beaumont Street.

He then walked into a supermarket car park where it’s alleged he randomly punched a 22-year-old man in the throat before fleeing on foot.

The suspect remains at large. He is described as being of Caucasian appearance and aged in his late 30s.

He is said to be around 175cm tall with a medium/muscular build, a tanned complexion, short brown hair with short trimmed facial hair and distinctive deep blue eyes.

Police said he was wearing dark-coloured “skinny” jeans, a black hooded jumper, white dress shoes with three blue stripes, a distinctive charcoal-coloured wool-style ‘Golf’ cap, and was carrying a dark duffel bag.

Anyone who witnessed either incident or has information about the man is urged to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
