Couple arrested after police chopper tracks stolen car

A MAN and a woman have been charged with 18 offences between them after they were allegedly caught driving around in a stolen car on the Gold Coast overnight.

The police helicopter began tracking the vehicle as it was being driven through Ashmore about 3am on Saturday.

Ground crews were called in and set up stingers at the intersection of Ashmore Road and Heeb Street to try and stop the vehicle.

The car hit the stingers but kept driving along Ashmore Road for several kilometres before turning left onto Southport Nerang Road.

Crews on the ground intercepted the stolen vehicle at the intersection of Kamholtz Place, near the big brand factory outlets, moments later.

There, the 25-year-old male driver and his 30-year-old female passenger were arrested and taken into custody.

They have each been charged with burglary, dangerous operation and unlawful use of a motor vehicle, stealing and receiving tainted property.

The man is also facing additional charges of possessing dangerous drugs and obstructing police.

The pair is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday morning.
