Couple charged after being found unconscious in car with toddler in backseat

A man and a woman will face court next month on drug and child neglect charges after they were allegedly found unconscious in the front seat of a car while a 15-month-old girl sat alone in the backseat.

The shocking discovery was made by NSW police at about 11.45pm on Wednesday.

“On Wednesday 28 September 2016, officers attached to Police Transport Command located a 34-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man unconscious in car in a car park on Tench Avenue, Penrith,” NSW police said in a statement.

When observing the vehicle, officers were left horrified after discovering a toddler in the back seat.

Paramedics were called to assess the youngster who was taken to the Nepean Hospital as a precaution.

The officers rendered assistance to the couple before arresting the pair and seizing drug paraphernalia and synthetic cannabis. They were taken to Penrith Police Station where they were charged with child neglect and possess prohibited drug.

Both were granted bail to appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday 31 October.

The child is now in the care of Family and Community and Services.
