Couple charged with neglecting five children in shocking case of child abuse

A MAN and a woman in their 20s have been arrested and charged with neglecting five young children under the age of 10, the youngest just two-months-old, in a shocking case of child abuse in South Australia.

Police allegedly found the children, aged between two months and nine years, living in squalid conditions at a house in Hillcrest, in Adelaide’s northeast, on Wednesday afternoon.

In a statement, police said officers were called to the house in relation to concerns about the welfare of the five children when they made the shocking discovery.

A 27-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were both arrested at the house and have both since been charged with five counts each of neglect and five counts of failing to provide.

The woman was granted bail to appear before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on January 25 while the man was remanded in custody to appear in the same this afternoon.

The children were removed from the house and are now being cared for by the Department of Child Protection.
