Couple charged with stealing dying man’s credit card from crash scene

Two heartless thieves have been charged with stealing a credit card from the scene of a fatal crash, using it to make several purchases at businesses in Queensland.

Around 1.00am on Saturday, a 37-year-old man was hit by a car in Hervey Bay.

The man suffered horrific injuries and was rushed to Hervey Bay Hospital where he died shortly after arrival.

Police allege that while members of the public were providing first aid to the injured man, his credit card was stolen from his wallet.

The victim’s wife alerted officers after noticing unauthorised transactions had been made on his credit card after his death.

Following ongoing investigations, police yesterday executed a search warrant at a Torquay home where a 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were taken into custody.

The 28-year-old man was charged with one count of stealing and four counts of fraud, with the 27-year-old woman charged with one count of stealing and eight counts of fraud.

The 46-year-old female driver of the vehicle involved in the crash escaped unharmed.
