Covert cops catch alleged child sex predator on chat site

UNDERCOVER police from the NSW Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad have arrested an alleged child sex predator, allegedly caught talking about having sex with kids in an online chat room.

Detectives from the Child Exploitation Internet Unit (CEIU) went covert and began engaging online with the 60-year-old man from Sydney’s eastern suburbs back in April.

Believing he was speaking with a 37-year-old woman, police will allege the man engaged in explicit conversations about committing sexual acts with children while purporting to be a woman himself.

Following extensive investigations, Strike Force Trawler detectives arrested the 60-year-old man at a home at Dover Heights on Thursday morning and seized a mobile phone, tablet and laptop.

The man was taken to Waverley Police Station where he was questioned extensively before being charged with ‘using a carriage service for child pornography material’.

He was remanded in custody overnight and due to appear before Waverley Local Court later today.

Investigations are continuing.

Strike Force Trawler is an ongoing investigation by the CEIU into the sexual abuse and exploitation of children facilitated through the internet and related telecommunications devices.

Regular covert online investigations are conducted by the CEIU; and police in NSW work closely with their law-enforcement colleagues interstate and overseas.
