COVID-19 death toll rises as Vic cases continue to climb

A man in Victoria has died from coronavirus, the country’s first death in over a month.

The man in his 80’s died overnight, taking the state’s death toll to 20 and the nation’s toll to 103.

It comes as Victoria records another 20 new cases overnight as concerns continue to grow about the situation in the state.

It’s the eighth straight day the state has recorded a double-digit increase.

Seven of the new cases are linked to known outbreaks, one was detected in hotel quarantine, nine tested positive after routine testing while three others are still under investigation.

Three staff members at a dental clinic are among those that have been diagnosed with the virus, while a childcare centre has been forced to close after a child tested positive.

Health officials say a total of 241 cases have been identified as coming from community transmission.

The total number of cases in Victoria has risen to 1884 with 141 of those still active.
