BOTH Hawthorn and West Coast would end the 2003 season battling for a spot inside the eight, but they started it fighting out a thriller at York Park in Launceston.

The Hawks held a slender lead from start to finish in a match where the quarter-by-quarter margin never extended beyond two goals.

Ultimately, it would be the territorial dominance of Hawthorn that paid dividends.

They may have kicked less goals than their opponents, but they had seven more scoring shots to secure a narrow two-point win.

Shane Crawford had a decisive say in the result with 28 disposals and a goal, while Lance Picoane and Jade Rawlings each booted three majors.
