Crime scene declared after man falls to his death from high-rise balcony

POLICE are investigating the death of a man who died after falling from a high-rise building in Cairns.

Emergency services were called to the Rydges Esplanade Resort on Abbott Street around 1.30am on Easter Sunday following reports that a man had fallen from a seventh-floor balcony.

Sadly, there was nothing they could do to save the 24-year-old man, who was found dead at the scene.

A crime scene has been established with early investigations suggesting the man’s death could be suspicious.

It was not immediately known if the man was a local or tourist visiting the area.

A 19-year-old man was this morning assisting police with their investigation.

He was taken from the apartment complex to Cairns Hospital after suffering an arm injury.

The 24-year-old man is the second person to die at a holiday resort in Cairns this weekend.

Police were called to the Coral Sands Beachfront Resort at Trinity Beach on Easter Saturday morning after a 71-year-old woman was found dead in a bedroom at the complex.

A 60-year-old man has since been charged with the woman’s murder. Read more here.
