Cyclist killed in crash at Byron Bay

A NORTHERN NSW cyclist has died after being hit by a ute in Byron Bay last night.

Around 8:15 on Tuesday night, the 66-year-old man was riding his bicycle west along Ewingsdale Road when he was struck by a white Holden Rodeo single cab ute travelling the same way.

The man sustained severe head injuries and, despite efforts of passersby and police, died at the scene.


The driver of the ute, a 43-year-old man, stopped and is assisting police with their inquiries.

He returned a negative breath test roadside, but has undergone mandatory blood and urine tests.

Both men are believed to be from the Byron Bay area.

Police are preparing a report for The Coroner and are urging anyone with information about this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
