Dad dies after drowning while surfing with son

A FATHER has tragically drowned while surfing with his son at a beach in northern NSW.

The father and son were surfing at Yamba’s Main Beach on Wednesday morning when the 57-year-old became distressed and disappeared in waste deep water.

Police said the man was unconscious when he was pulled from the water by surf life guards.

They tried resuscitating the man at the scene until paramedics arrived and took over treatment.

Sadly, police confirmed the man was pronounced dead at Maclean District Hospital a short time later.

Initial investigations suggest the man may have suffered a medical episode in the water.

A brief will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
