Darwin rattled by 6.6 magnitude earthquake in Banda Sea

Darwin residents have been woken by a strong earthquake which struck in the Banda Sea this morning.

The 6.6 magnitude quake was felt in Darwin just before 6.00am.

“Certainly felt this this morning, the bed was literally shaking,” one resident wrote on Twitter.


“Just felt the biggest earthquake yet in Darwin, decent amount of shaking and noise. More than a little bit concerning being in a top floor apartment,” commented another.

The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed there’s no tsunami threat to Australia.

“As most of you in are probably aware, there was a 6.6 this morning at 5:44 am CST in the Banda Sea,” BOM Northern Territory wrote.

“There is NO threat of a tsunami to Australia.”
