A date has been set for a by-election in Joe Hockey’s former seat of North Sydney.
Speaker Tony Smith announced this morning it will be held on December 5, with nominations to be declared on November 13.
The former treasurer resigned from parliament last Thursday, just weeks after being dumped as Treasurer when Malcolm Turnbull was voted in as the new Liberal Leader and Prime Minister.

There is plenty of speculation Mr Hockey will take over as ambassador to the United States.
Yesterday, independent senator Nick Xenophon called on Mr Hockey to reject his pension if he is appointed to the role.
He’s urged him not to “double dip” and to reject his parliamentary pension while he collects the $330,000 salary for the ambassador role.
Senator Xenophon says if Mr Hockey doesn’t co-operate, he’ll draft a bill to stop politicians collecting their pensions while taking up diplomatic posts.
