He is the current national coach of Papua new Guinea and has more recently been the midfield coach for the Brisbane Lions AFLW team.
GC SUNS, Head of Women’s Football Fiona McLarty said Lake had possessed the right skills and experience to secure the role.
“We are incredibly pleased to announce that David Lake will be the inaugural coach of the Gold Coast SUNS AFLW team,” McLarty said.
“David is a highly respected and successful coach and joins the club with established relationships across multiple levels of the Queensland football community.
“The appointment of David brings a new level of experience and expertise to our football program and allow us to move into our next stage of establishment in an extremely strong position.”
Lake says he is excited by the opportunity.
“To move from a position where I thought i was happy and floating along the female system and really enjoying myself, to an opportunity like this, and the closer i got to the opportunity and the more i saw about the professionalism of the Suns and where things are going, you can feel yourself falling in and really wanting to get the role.”
Lake admits getting the club ready for their debut season in 2020 is going to be a challenge.
” A list build is everything, and getting the right people and going through a process of how you bring those right people into your organisation and what your key points are and what you thinks important to bring to your footy club, all that will play a massive role so thinking about those things and executing those things will be the hardest part.
“Get all that right and the rest will be a lot of fun.”
