Death toll from New Zealand mosque massacre rises to 50

INVESTIGATORS have confirmed, another body has been found inside a mosque in Christchurch, bringing the death toll from Friday’s horrific terror attack to 50.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush held a media conference on Sunday morning, where he explained that the body was found as they removed victims from the two mosques that were targeted.

“It is with sadness that I advise, that the number of people who have died in this awful event, has now risen to 50,” Comm Bush said.

“As of last night we were able to take all of the victims from both of those scenes, and in doing so we have located a further victim,” he said.

“The number of injured is also 50. 36 of those remain in Christchurch Hospital… two do remain critical.”

Authorities are also working to release the bodies to the families for burial “as quickly and sensitively as possible” as is customary in the Islamic faith.

“We have to be absolutely clear on cause of death and confirm their identity before that can happen.

“But we are so aware of the cultural and religious needs.”

Police will not release the victims names until they have been formally identified.
