A nurse who has worked on the Gold Coast for more than 30 years has won the 1029 Hot Tomato Gold Coast Nursing Award for April.
Debra Hergenhan, who currently works as a community nurse for Aster Home Nursing Services, said she was shocked to win the award. “There are thousands of nurses on the Gold Coast who deserve recognition. I am very humbled to win,” she said.
“You don’t become a nurse for the glory of it – I believe it is something you are born to do. I feel very blessed to be able to get up every day and help people.”

Ms Hergenhan told myGC she feels privileged to care for the elderly in her role as a community nurse. “Some of my patients I have been looking after for more than 15 years, so you really feel like part of their family,” she said.
Along with a certificate, Debra wins $250 and is now a finalist in the Annual Award where she could share in cash and prizes of over $5,000.
“I still can’t believe it! Thank you so much to the patient that took the time to nominate me.”
