A PLANNED hazard reduction burn underway at an Army training base west of the Gold Coast is blanketing parts of the Gold Coast in smoke.
The Department of Defence is conducting the burn in thick bushland in the Canungra Land Warfare Training Area, near the Kokoda Army Barracks at Witheren.
The burn-off began near Beaudesert-Nerang and Back Creek roads on Sunday and is expected to last until Thursday.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) spokesperson said current forecasts suggest the smoke is likely to move in a north-westerly direction.
As a result, smoke is likely to affect areas in and around Canungra, Witheren, Clagiraba, Benobble, Mount Tamborine and Lower Beechmont, Coomera and Upper Coomera.
Residents in the area are advised to close their windows and doors, and keep respiratory medications close by.
Smoke may also decrease visibility on roads so motorists are advised to drive with caution and to suit conditions.
