Dept of Transport concerned after school bus leaves boy behind

THE mother of a 12-year-old Gold Coast student allegedly left behind by a bus driver because he didn’t have the correct change fears the method to refuse travel in such circumstances increased the chance of child abduction.

The year 8 student told Channel Seven he and three others were refused entry on the school bus from Helensvale High School on Tuesday afternoon because they “didn’t have enough change”.

By the time the boy’s mother arrived to collect her son, he was the only child left sitting around.

Transport Minister Scott Emerson told Channel Seven he was concerned that the children were turned away when there was no history of similar, patterned behaviour.

“These children should have been taken on board,” Mr Emerson said.

The Principal of the school said a teacher who thought the children were not allowed on the bus stepped in and told them to go to the office.

But Surfside Buslines said they would have allowed the students on the bus if the teacher hadn’t intervened first.

The Department of Transport is investigating.
