Deputy Chief Medical Officer slams behaviour of ‘Bunnings Karen’ in viral video

Australia’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer has hit out at ‘Bunnings Karen’, calling recent footage of a woman arguing with staff over face masks ‘disturbing’.

The video flooded social media channels over the weekend, after the woman filmed herself approaching staff at a Bunnings in southeast Melbourne.

Nick Coatsworth has this morning told the ABC it was disturbing footage, and has commended the Bunnings staff for their calm reponse.

“The vast majority of Australians will have been disturbed by that. This is a small minority.

“I would like to commend the staff member and the staff in Bunnings and I’m sorry they had to deal with that.

“There is no room for that behaviour in Australian society. It might be better placed elsewhere in the world.

“We see it happening in other countries, but not our own. We’re in this fight together against coronavirus and mandatory mask wearing is not an enormous ask.

“I don’t view it as a Human Rights or civil liberties issue. It is something that we need to do to help bend the curve and bring us down the other side,” Mr Coatsworth said.

In the Greater Melbourne area and the Mitchell Shire in Victoria, it has recently become mandatory for everyone to wear a face mask while out and about, with police given the powers to fine those caught breaking the rules.

But, in the video, ‘Karen’ tells the staff they are discriminating against her for asking her to wear a mask, sighting the 1948 Charter of Human Rights.

On arrival, a staff member asks the woman for a medical certificate because she isn’t wearing a mask, then also requests that the woman stop filming her.

“I actually don’t need a medical certificate if you refer to the — no I’m allowed to do this, and you’re discriminating against me.

When the staff member tries to assure the woman that ‘we’re all in this together, she responds “All in what together – I actually don’t”.

“And you’re not authorised by the Australian government to even question me about it,” she says.

Another staff member then lets the woman know that it is a condition of entry into the store that she wear a mask.

“Then that’s discrimination and I can have sued personally for discriminating against me as a woman,” the woman says.

Here we go again !! I’m led to belive this is the same lady who was stringing up the police in the videos we posted earlier. What is wrong with people. We are all in this together. Where’s the Bunnings guy human rights when he asked her to stop filming. .Unbelievable .Well done to the members that stood there ground at Bunnings.

While I personally think this woman is a self indulgent fool . I’m actually wondering if legislators have passed a law making it illegal not to wear a mask ?? Or are we just being ENCOURAGED to wear one ?

you can be fined $200 for not wearing one, and besides it’s simply common decency to wear something that could possibly some dozens of lives

I would like to know whether this oxygen waster is on welfare benefits and whether she would put on a mask if entering a Centrelink office for assistance. I would encourage the 3 Bunnings staff to commence legal action against her. I further believe there are grounds to compulsorily arrest her in order to conduct a full psychiatric evaluation. She appears to be not only a menace but potentially a danger to the community. We don’t need her walking our streets.

Someone needs to find out her name

It also seems this fool also went to a chemist and carried on about wearing a mask many fools in this country and she tops the list

Prolonged mask usage is not good. The temporary ones quickly reduce their ability to filter (even IF fitted correctly) as condensation builds up in the mask.

Also, people are getting sick from reusable ones because bacteria builds up because of the condensation and warm air from the base and mouth.
Studies about mask use for the flu are many. This is the same thing.

And, asymptotic people are not infectious, this was recently reported in the USA.

As a health professional I was going to re-educate you. But you know what? I can’t be bothered wasting my time on people who think they know better than doctors, specialists, and WHO.

You are horrible, how s***ty do you have to be to go into a store and harass a poor person who is just trying to do their job and get by, in a literal pandemic, and you go in there and make their job, which is already a difficult one dealing with s***ty people like you, and going into a store and belittling and making the people feel unsafe. You are a disgusting disgrace of a human being. Get a grip on yourself and get some damn morals

I personally find this woman’s conduct rude and selfish and retail staff should not have to put up with this sort of behaviour, BUT I also find the way in which you label her a “Karen” demeaning and insulting to anyone with this name. Surely with your journalism degree and high level of literacy you do not need to resort to insulting other people’ s names. Labelling people leads to a devisive society.

These unstable people need a psychiatric assessment from the The Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team and then when they are put away they might have the right to complain about their civil liberties. Disgraceful humans

Actually i am wondering whether “karen” violated those workers rights by filming them in their workplace without their consent AND posting on public pages?!?. In which case I hope they sue her. Also as a customer to bunnings I do not wish to have some random filming in the store – so there is a question of that. Finally as a woman – how dare she even infer this was about gender. So not! Clearly a desperate wanting attention. I applaud the restraint shown by these employees.

Real Concerned over the discrimination been businesses that are forced to social distance.
Majority are forced to maintain social distancing.
Why are Airlines allowed to fill aircraft to maximum available seating.
Without any social distancing whatsoever.

This is totally wrong when one business can ignore social distancing and fill with maximum capacity with people shoulder to shoulder.

Putting lives at risk with full approval from government’s.

While other business are find for not abiding by social distancing.
Something so wrong about this.

How do you expect people to take social distancing seriously about social distancing when it’s allowed to be ignored by some and enforced on others.

Such inconsistency won’t win any medical expert or politician’s any respect.
