Digital driver licences to be rolled out in Qld

The days of plastic driver licences are numbered with the state government set to roll out digital licences from next year.

It follows a successful trial on the Fraser Coast last year which found a 94 per cent satisfaction rating.

Digital licences will be rolled out in Townsville later this year before expanding across Queensland in 2023.

Drivers will be able to download their licence onto their smartphone and ditch their plastic licence.

It will also be able to be used overseas as the digital version will comply with international standards.

The state government has signed a contract with Thales Australia & New Zealand to develop the app.

Digital licences have been in use in New South Wales since 2019 with around 4 million people using them.
