It’s understood the flights will see capacity almost double at the Gold Coast Airport, which will also help the airport and associated businesses.
The first flight will be welcomed today with a traditional water cannon salute by the airport’s fire-fighting service.
There will now be a flight from the Gold Coast to Cairns daily, sometimes twice daily on Fridays, Sundays, and Mondays.
Prices start from around $140 each way.
