A WOMAN has been airlifted to a hospital on the Gold Coast where she is fighting for life after almost drowning at a beach south of the border.
It’s understood the woman was pulled unconscious from the surf at Clarkes Beach in Byron Bay on Friday morning.
Multiple ambulance crews were dispatched to the scene shortly before midday AEDT.

Lifeguards performed CPR on the woman on the sand before paramedics arrived and took over treatment.
The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Service was also deployed to the beach.
It’s understood the woman, believed to be in her 50s, may have suffered a head injury, causing her to lose consciousness.
She has since been flown to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.
