Dragons turn on the heat late against the Panthers to secure place in finals

ALEX HEINKE reports.

St George Illawarra have all but secured their place in the 2015 finals by defeating the Panthers 19-12.

It was a mixed night for the Dragons, three players were put on report but the halves finished superbly as they secured 7th spot in Wollongong.

The Panthers were showing promising glimpses of last years form but the Dragons managed to get over the line, as Gareth Widdop and Benji Marshall came to the fore in the final quarter.

They bounced back from last weekend’s poor performance against table toppers Brisbane.

The Dragons needed two points to stay in the eight with the fast-finishing Sea Eagles pushing for a tight finish.

After scores were tied at 12-12 for most of second half, a nice Widdop kick allowed the Dragons to trap the Panthers in-goal and Marshall showed his experience and slotted a field goal the next set.

Seven minutes later, Widdop grubbered for himself and planted it to kill off any chance of a Panthers comeback.
