Driver accused of ‘throwing punches and kicking’ police after being pulled over

TWO police officers have been left covered in cuts and bruises after being attacked during a vehicle stop in northern NSW.

The officers were patrolling Brunswick Heads on Thursday night when they spotted a suspicious car being driven along Riverside Crescent around 10pm.

They intercepted the vehicle, at which time the 22-year-old man behind the wheel is alleged to have lashed out at the officers.

The man allegedly “started throwing punches and kicking” the officers before he was eventually arrested and taken to Byron Bay Police Station.

The man was also allegedly found in possession of cannabis.

He was charged with two counts of assault police, two counts of resist arrest and possess prohibited drug.

The man was released on conditional bail and is due to appear in Mullumbimby Local Court on June 26.

The officers sustained swelling and cuts to their face and bodies.
