Driver airlifted to hospital in critical condition after horror smash in Qld

A MAN has been airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries following a horror crash in the Scenic Rim.

The 42-year-old was driving along the Cunningham Highway at Aratula during the early hours of Wednesday morning when his car crossed onto the wrong side of the road and collided with two semi-trailers.

Police said the man was driving south when his car collided with the back of an oncoming semi-trailer before smashing into a second truck, which was travelling behind the first.

The driver of the car was critically wounded and has been airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The drivers of both trucks escaped the collision unharmed.

The Cunningham Highway was blocked and diversions were put in place while the scene was examined and the wreckage was cleared. It has since reopened.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident and is appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Anyone who may have seen a blue 2003 Holden Commodore, with distinctive purple panelling, travelling along the Cunningham Highway prior to 2.10am, is being urged to contact police.
