Driver carjacked by hitchhiker armed with rock south of the Gold Coast

A DRIVER has been carjacked by a hitchhiker armed with a large rock south of the Gold Coast.

Police said a 26-year-old man flagged the driver down on Wharf Street in Murwillumbah around 2.45am on Wednesday. The driver, who was heading north, agreed to give the man a lift.

The hitchhiker then allegedly carjacked the vehicle as it approached the Sextons Hill overpass on the M1.

Police said the 26-year-old threatened the driver with a large rock and ordered him out of the car.

The driver complied and the hitchhiker drove the car north towards the Queensland border.

He didn’t get far though; the man was arrested in Tweed Heads just before 6.30am.

The 26-year-old has since been charged with aggravated take and drive motor vehicle with a person in it – armed with weapon.

Granted conditional bail, the young man will appear in Tweed Heads Local Court next month.
