Driver dies in hospital after Gold Coast crash

AN ELDERLY man has tragically died in hospital after losing control of his car and crashing into a power pole outside a unit complex on the Gold Coast.

It happened as the 90-year-old tried exiting a secure car park on Lather Street in Southport about 9am on Thursday.

The man is thought to have suffered a medical condition shortly after getting into his car, causing him to inadvertently accelerate and lose control of the vehicle.

Police said the man’s car smashed straight through the closed garage door and accelerated across the street where it clipped a parked car before slamming into a power pole.

The 90-year-old sustained lacerations to his head and knee and was suffering chest pain when paramedics arrived.

He was treated at he scene before being taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Sadly, in a statement this afternoon, Queensland Police confirmed the man died in hospital this morning.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dash cam vision to come forward.
