Driver dies after losing control of car and crashing into street light

A man has died after losing control of his car and crashing into a street light in Melbourne’s south-east.

The accident happened along the Nepean Highway at Mentone just before 9.30pm.

Police said the man appeared to have been travelling south along the highway in the right hand lane when he lost control of his car.

The man’s vehicle mounted a centre median strip near Swanston Street and struck a light pole.

It is thought the 70-year-old driver may have suffered from a medical condition moments before losing control.

He died at the scene.

No one else was travelling in the car at the time of the collision.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Officers will prepare a report for the Coroner.
