Driver killed after car careens down embankment into tree

A WOMAN has tragically died after her car ran off the road and slammed into a tree near Byron Bay.

It happened on Bangalow Road, between Bangalow and Talofa, about 3.30pm AEDT on Wednesday.

It’s understood the woman was driving east, towards Byron Bay when her white Ford left the road, careened down an embankment and smashed into a tree.

The woman was unconscious and non-responsive when emergency services arrived at the scene.

It’s understood paramedics performed CPR on the driver but she could not be revived.

In a statement, NSW Police confirmed the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

She was the only person travelling in the car at the time and is yet to be formally identified, police said.

The Westpac Life Saver Helicopter had been dispatched to the scene but was not needed.

Officers from the Tweed/Byron Police District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident and will prepare a report for the Coroner.

The road is expected to remain closed for some time while the scene is examined.

Traffic diversions are in place.
