Driver killed after car smashes into tree on NSW highway

A 20-YEAR-OLD man has been killed after the car he was driving smashed into a tree in southern NSW.

The accident happened near Mittagong, in the state’s Southern Highlands region around 6.20pm on Thursday.

Police said it appeared as though the man had been travelling along the Old Hume Highway when, for reasons yet to be determined, his car left the road and collided with a tree at Woodlands.

Sadly, emergency services arrived to find the man deceased inside the severely damaged car.

Police said he was the only person travelling in the car at the time.

A crime scene was established and examined by forensic specialists overnight.

Investigators are now probing the circumstances surrounding the accident.
