A MAN has died after crashing a stolen car head-on into a truck while trying to evade police in northern NSW.
Police first spotted the stolen vehicle travelling along the New England Highway near Bendemeer, 40km north of Tamworth, around 8.45am on Thursday.
As officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver allegedly failed to stop and collided head-on with a truck.

The truck burst into flames on impact and the fire swept through bushland which lined the highway.
The man behind the wheel of the stolen car was critically injured in the collision and died at the scene.
The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol tests.
The New England Highway was closed for several hours in both directions while investigators examined the scene.
A critical incident team has been tasked to investigate all circumstances surrounding the pursuit and accident.
That investigation will be subject to independent review and all information will be provided to the Coroner.
