A 62-year-old Helensvale man has been charged with two counts of possession of a restricted weapon and one count each of possession of a concealable firearm, possession of explosives, dangerous drugs, a restricted drug and possession of a utensil.
Detective Acting Superintendent Brendan Smith of Taskforce Maxima said the unlawful possession of semi-automatic handguns demonstrates the criminal behaviour of the participants of these gangs.
“One only has to ask ‘why do they need them?,” he said.
“The shooting at the Robina Shopping Centre in 2012 provides a clear illustration of the danger posed to the Queensland Community by gang members unlawfully possessing firearms and accordingly we will do everything in our power to remove these weapons from our streets.”
The man is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on Friday, July 25.
