Easter traffic chokes major Gold Coast roads

HOLIDAYMAKERS heading away for the Easter long weekend are expected to choke major traffic routes throughout the Gold Coast, Logan and Scenic Rim regions today. 

Motorists can expect heavy traffic conditions on the Pacific Motorway, both north and southbound, and on other major routes around the city.

Police will be out in force over the four-day break with both covert and marked speed cameras. Random breath and drug-test patrols will also be stepped up.

6.00pm: Last report for the evening – It’s going to be a long journey for a lot of motorists heading away for the long weekend tonight. Stop-start for southbound travellers on the Pacific Motorway between Pimpama and Palm Beach.

Motorists have been urged to show patience and drive to suit conditions.

Night works on the Pacific Motorway between Worongary (Exit 77) and Robina (Exit 82) will continue tonight, although construction will stop over Easter and resume on Tuesday 22 April 2014.

5.20pm: Traffic accident on Christine Avenue, past the Easy-T centre. Reports the southbound section of road from Konda Way & Christine Ave is blocked, with traffic heading into Varsity Lakes being diverted. Sole occupant of the vehicle reportedly walked away without any serious injury.

5.15pm: Very slow moving for everyone heading south on the M1 this evening, particularly for motorists between Nerang and Palm Beach. Also, beginning to build up between Pimpama and Coomera, and around the Smith Street Exit.

4.50pm: Reports of two black covert Speed Camera vans to look out for on Christine Avenue near the new Aldi Shopping Centre.

4.40pm: Reports of a broken down car blocking the left lane of Hooker Boulevard, eastbound just past Carrara Markets.

4.35pm: Still extremely congested in the southbound lanes of the Pacific Motorway between Nerang and Palm Beach this afternoon. Also, slow moving for those heading south on the M1 around the Smith Street Exit and further north around Coomera.

4.28pm: Congestion westbound on Brisbane Road through Biggera Waters and Arundel. Short delays expected. Proceed with caution.

ROADWORKS REMINDER: Night works on the Pacific Motorway between Worongary (Exit 77) and Robina (Exit 82) will continue tonight, Thursday April 17. Construction will stop over Easter and resume on Tuesday 22 April 2014.

Single lane closures will be in place, in both directions (northbound 7pm to 5am and southbound 8pm to 6am) and the speed limit will be reduced to 40km/h through the work site. Motorists are asked to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and obey road work signage and speed restrictions.

3.55pm: Heavily congested southbound on the M1 between Nerang and Palm Beach.

3.30pm: Already a shocking run on the M1 this afternoon, particularly for southbound travellers through the reduced speed roadworks zone between Nerang South (Exit 73) to Reedy Creed (Exit 85). All lanes affected and long delays expected. Motorists urged to show patience.

Also pretty heavy southbound on the M1 around the Smith Street Exit.

There is a Speed Camera too look out for on Christine Avenue, Varsity Lakes for those heading west just before the Varsity Primary School. Another radar on Wardoo Street, Southport for those heading east, hiding just passed Benowa Road.
