Eight killed in horrific New Zealand crash

EIGHT people have been killed and a child critically injured in a horror head-on crash in New Zealand.

It happened in wet weather near Ohakuri Road, Atiamuri, in the North Island town of Taupo on Sunday.

Emergency services, including a fleet of ambulances, were dispatched to the scene on State Highway 1 at 10.30am.

Police said an SUV collided head-on with a van, killing both drivers and six passengers from the van.

Speaking to media at the scene, Bay of Plenty Inspector Brent Crowe said it appeared one of the vehicles had crossed onto the wrong side of the road while negotiating a bend and smashed into the other vehicle.

“To describe the scene behind us as a complete tragedy is an understatement,” Inspector Crowe said.

He confirmed a child, believed to be a 9-year-old boy, was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.

The young boy is believed to be the only person to have survived the crash.

Inspector Crowe said it was too early to tell if the deceased were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

It had been raining and the roads were wet at the time, he said.

Light rain was still falling at the scene when the serious crash unit arrived about midday.

The Disaster Victim Identification team (DVI) has also been sent to the scene.

The crash occurred just a 10-minute drive from where five family members were killed in a crash four weeks ago.
