Elderly man killed in hit-and-run outside family’s Sydney home

A MAJOR search is underway for a white van and its driver after an elderly man was run over and killed in a horror hit-and-run outside his family’s home in Sydney’s southwest this afternoon.

The man in his 70s was struck as he went to get into his car on Clarence Street in Condell Park just before 4pm.

Police said the victim had just opened his car door when he was mowed down by a white van. The driver of the van failed to stop and kept driving down the street in a northerly direction.

The elderly man suffered life-threatening injuries. He was treated at the scene by paramedics but his injuries were too severe and he died in the back of an ambulance while being rushed to hospital.

Police have saturated the area in the search for the white van, which is described as being similar to a mini-van and may have damage to the front passenger side, and its driver.

Investigators are urging anyone who knows of the whereabouts of the van in the incident or the driver to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 immediately.
