Elderly man punched by bus passenger at Palm Beach

UPDATE: A teenager has been charged after an elderly man was bashed on a bus at Palm Beach.

Detectives arrested the 16-year-old on Monday and following questioning laid a charge of grievous bodily harm.

Police say the boy became violent when asked to stop smoking by a fellow passenger on board the bus around 11.15pm on Saturday .


He allegedly punched the 71-year-old male passenger in the face and head.

The boy and his friends got off the bus a short time later.

The man was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital with facial injuries, including serious bruising to his eye.

EARLIER: An elderly man is in the Gold Coast University Hospital, after being attacked on a bus at Palm Beach.

The 71-year-old was travelling with a female friend from Tweed Heads to Southport at about 11.15pm on Saturday when the incident occurred.

Police say the bus stopped at Tugun and a group of six men in their early twenties got on.

One of the men started smoking and the victim asked him to stop, prompting a verbal argument.

The other passenger punched the victim a number of times in the head and face before he and his friends got off the bus.

The man suffered facial injuries and has been treated in hospital.

His attacker is described as in his early twenties, 175cm tall, Caucasian in appearance with short blonde hair and wearing a white jumper and beige pants.
