Elderly woman bailed up, punched and robbed at Sydney supermarket

An elderly woman has been punched in the head and robbed by a knife-wielding man at a supermarket in Sydney’s southwest.

Police said the 73-year-old woman was attacked in the car park of the Rickard Road supermarket in Bankstown just after midday.

It’s understood the woman had only just parked her car and was bailed up by a man as she opened her door to get out.

Police said the man approached the woman from the rear of the vehicle and repeatedly demanded money from her.

Terrified, the 73-year-old woman sounded her car horn in a desperate attempt to draw attention to the robbery.

The man then allegedly punched the woman in the back of the head before producing a flick knife and reaching into the vehicle to grab the woman’s handbag.

Police said the man snatched a stash of cash from the woman’s purse before placing it and the handbag back in her the car and running away.

The woman called police and took herself to see a local doctor.

Police are still searching for the alleged offender, described as being around 30-years-old, Caucasian in appearance and 170cm tall.

Police said the man had a medium build, was clean shaven and wore a navy zip up top, black tracksuit pants and woollen gloves.

Investigators are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
