‘Erratic driver’ detained in dramatic M1 arrest

A MAN has been arrested in dramatic scenes on the side of the M1 on the Gold Coast.

The dramatic arrest played out on the side of the motorway at Merrimac shortly after 11.30am.

Speaking to myGC, a Queensland Police spokesman said they received reports of a car being driven erratically in the southbound lanes about 11.15am.


Riley Jade Murphy told myGC she was travelling along the M1 with her two young daughters in the car when a white Holden Commodore wagon overtook her at extreme speed.

“He (the driver) passed us with our two young daughters in the car at Nerang,” Ms Murphy said.

“He was doing 170km/h-plus and was weaving in and out of cars.”

The vehicle was intercepted near Merrimac a short time later and the driver taken into custody following a short struggle.

Queensland Police told myGC the incident appeared to be mental health related.

A man is assisting police with their inquiries.
