Escaped prisoner on the run in Port Macquarie

A large scale search is currently underway for an escaped prisoner in Port Macquarie.

Matthew Furner was under the supervision of correction officers in hospital, when he escaped this morning.

Police were called to Port Macquarie Base Hospital just before 8.00am, where on arrival they were told one of the guards had discharged a ‘warning shot’ from his firearm during the escape.

A large scale search is now underway, involving local police, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, the dog uni and PolAir.

Members of the community are being urged to avoid the area, after the 28-year-old was see running west from the Oxley Highway near Lake Road.

He’s described as being of Caucasian appearance, 180cm tall, with a slim build and a shaved head with a rats tail.

He was last seen wearing prison greens (t-shirt and tracksuit pants).

Members of the public are being urged not to approach Matthew, and to contact police immediately.
