Excitement building as GC600’s Race Week kicks off on the Gold Coast

The biggest week on the Gold Coast is here – and excitement is well and truly in the air.

The GC600 is just days away, though Race Week kicked off in Surfers Paradise this morning, with our local drivers looking forward to a weekend of street racing.

To kick it all of, four local drivers – Jamie Whincup, Craig Lowndes, Chaz Mostert and Tim Slade –  gathered in Surfers Paradise this morning, where they were already flocked by fans.

Defending PIRTEK Enduro Cup Champion Craig Lowndes says he’s stoked to race at home again, and is hoping for nice, dry weather.

“I’m really exited, i think it’s a great place – the party carnival is starting to happen.

“Driving past the track then obviously the construction part of it is all underway.

“You know, I’m looking forward to it, I think the long range forecast is good which is great, and I’m looking forward to pairing up and sharing a car with Jamie,” Lowndes told reporters and fans under the Surfers Paradise sign this morning.

Similarly, team mate Jamie Whincup – who was ironically running slightly late to the launch due to traffic – says he can’t wait either.

“The biggest week on the Gold Coast has just started, we’re so pumped to get out there.

“The walls are in, it’s a little fresh at the moment, but they’re predicting 31 degrees on the weekend so absolutely perfect conditions for what is a massive carnival,” the eight-time race winner said.

He also reckons him and Lowndesy have a good chance this year, after a seagull almost landed one on Lowndes (a poop, that is).

“Anything that can happen in Motorsport generally does happen at the GC600 – we didn’t have much luck at Bathurst but I don’t know if you saw – Lowndesy almost got sh*t on by a seagull!

“So I’m hoping it’s a good omen for the week and we get some luck this weekend,” Whincup said.

There’ll be a bunch of activities in the lead up to the event, including the Transporter Parade through Main Beach on Wednesday, and the Sunset Signing Session in Surfers Paradise on Thursday.
