Extensive police chase leads to dramatic arrests

UPDATE: TWO kids have been charged with an alleged crime spree which spread from Biggera Waters to Logan.

The boys, aged 14 and 16, are accused of stealing a car during a burglary at a home in Biggera Waters on Monday.

The owner and his wife spotted the duo, with a mate, approaching the vehicle on Coombabah Road at Runaway Bay around 10.45am yesterday.

The 71-year-old man confronted them and demanded they give his car back.

Police say the stolen vehicle was then driven at the man, knocking him to the ground before being driven away. The man sustained minor head injuries.

His wife, who was driving their other car was treated for shock.

The incident sparked a ground and air search involving PolAir with a vehicle, which had allegedly been stolen from Underwood earlier in the day, spotted around 1.20pm.

It was driving along Brisbane Road at Helensvale and when it failed to stop was tracked by the Police helicopter and other police units to an address at Woodridge where two boys were arrested.

A 16-year-old Woodridge boy was charged with two counts of burglary and one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, failing to stop a motor vehicle and stealing.

A 14-year-old Beenleigh boy was charged with three counts of burglary and one count each of fraud, trespass and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

They will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.

Police located the first stolen vehicle abandoned on Lagoon Park Drive at Maudsland yesterday afternoon and are now searching for a silver Mercedes Benz E250 which was stolen from a nearby residence.

Investigations into the hit and run incident and other subsequent offences are continuing.

EARLIER: TWO people have been arrested and a third remains on the run after a dramatic police chase stretching from the Gold Coast to Logan.

It all started when a 71-year-old man from Biggera Waters noticed three men of Pacific Islander appearance driving his silver Hyundai i30 hatchback on Coombabah Road shortly after 10.30am on Tuesday. The car was allegedly stolen from the area on Monday night.

The elderly man is believed to have then approached the vehicle and demanded the thieves get out. The driver panicked and reversed towards the man, pinning him between two vehicles, before fleeing the scene.

There are reports the same vehicle was also used in a petrol drive-off at Oxenford overnight.

The elderly man was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital with minor head injuries. His 64-year-old wife, who was present at the time, was also taken to hospital suffering from severe shock.

The police helicopter took to the skies and assisted multiple ground crews in the search for the stolen car, which, at some point, sustained damage to the rear driverside door.

At around 1.20pm, further reports claimed a second vehicle – a 2003 Holden Astra – was also stolen from Underwood, Logan on Tuesday morning by three man matching the same description of those involved in the Biggera Waters incident.

Following an extensive ground and air search, the Astra was located in Woodridge and two male suspects were arrested. A third suspect fled on foot along Compton Road. He remains on the run.

It is not yet known whether the silver Hyundai i30 hatchback has been located.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
