Facebook AI to detect possible suicide

Facebook will use artificial intelligence to discover if any of their users is contemplating suicide.

The Social Media giant already has mechanisms in place for flagging posts from people considering harming themselves.

Under this new feature, the AI is intended to detect these posts even before anyone flags or reports them.

The system scans videos, pictures and posts for pattern recognition, with the AI looking for comments from friends like “are you ok?”.

Facebook Vice President Guy Rosen wrote in a company blog post that users will be prompted to contact law enforcement if necessary.

“We’ve found these accelerated reports, that we have signalled require immediate attention, are escalated to local authorities twice as quickly as other reports,” he said.

The system is already being tested in the US.
