Fanning heads home after near-death experience in South Africa

Mick Fanning is set arrive home on the Gold Coast following his near-death experience with a shark in South Africa.

The world champion’s escape stunned the world after he came face-to-face with the animal and it briefly dragged him underwater, getting caught in his leg rope during the J-Bay Open final on Sunday at Jeffrey’s Bay.

The 34-year-old escaped without a scratch but was left terrified, every moment caught by cameras and beamed around the world live.

He managed to fight the shark off by punching it before being pulled out of the water by safety crews.

“I was kicking trying to get it away,” he said afterwards.

“I instantly just jumped away. It kept coming at my board and I was kicking and screaming.

“I just saw fins. I was waiting for teeth. I punched it in the back.”

Fanning is expected to front media in Sydney on Tuesday after touching down at the airport.

He’s then expected to fly home to the Gold Coast to meet up with family.
